When I was packing up to move from Chicago I found this letter that I saved from Belli’s first summer. We were about 9 months in and business was terrible, I was struggling left and right to pay rent & I was planning for the inevitable closure at the end of the year, if we even made it that far.
A friend recommended this city program that he thought would help since we were understaffed. A few weeks later, 10 teens from back of the yards and englewood were sent to work at belli’s. I ordered T-shirts & after the first day of meeting them I was putting together a whole program for the next 8 weeks, determined to end business achieving something. I wasn’t going to just have them sit around for 8 weeks & not learn anything.
At the end of the program, one of the interns wrote me this letter & I’ve kept it for ten years as a reminder. (LaTisha if you’re reading this, thank you!) I was feeling hopeless in the beginning trying to make ends meet but my perspective shifted after that summer. I wanted to make an impact & participating in this program reminded me of belli’s health & community mission.
You don’t need to own a business to make an impact though. Every day we can choose to be kind, compassionate, offer grace, & work to be better humans.
It was the first of five summers that Belli’s participated in the city program, and I could write a whole book just about that. But today, just a small snippet for flashback Friday!

Owning a small business in the community I have called home for over 17 years now has been the greatest joy of my life in these past 10 years of business.
Thank you so much and I hope that we were able to bring some slither of joy into your life at some point over these ten years. I know so many of you have done so for me.

10 years, 3 relocations, & 7 storefronts later, we are days away from our 10 Year anniversary month.
And just like the fresh & organic ingredients we use daily, even businesses have an expiration date. Ours is finally here.

While Alex (the owner) is planning to relocate from Chicago, we are hoping to keep the Belli's spirit alive as we continue to search for new ownership. So we are sharing this amazing opportunity with anyone who might be interested! Our brand is not for sale but our space is & ready to go for the next business owner along with our smoothies & cold pressed juices. We’d like to keep it locally owned while offering quality food, & staying health conscious as a community space for years to come - so please share!

And a little way back Wednesday to 1️⃣0️⃣ years ago this month, when we were finalizing the business plan before opening in October 2013. The business still didn't have a name at the time - and when the owner Alex started researching business concepts that were similar to her project to bring healthy food options to the community she lived in, she came across Louis’ grocers, a nonprofit grocery store that operated in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood. Louis grocers had a shared mission to increase access to fresh, healthy food & Alex was determined to follow a similar business model with her project that still had no name. After discovering Louis’ grocer was named after the founder’s french bulldog, Louis, Alex was inspired to also name the business after the french bulldog she had rescued, Belli. And that's how the name Belli's came to be!
Although our namesake founder Belli passed away peacefully in 2020, we are excited to share our newest shop dog- in-training, Marley! Feel free to say hi as she learns the ins and outs of how to be a good (outside) greeter for our guests. 👋
