What people say

Japanese restaurants are known for their exquisite cuisine and attention to detail. Sumi Robata Bar, located on N Wells Street in Chicago, is no exception. This authentic Japanese Robatayaki takes pride in being natural, focused, and creative. The restaurant's name derives from the Japanese word for charcoal, which reflects the tradition and skill of Robata grilling.

Chef Gene Kato is an industry leader in this segment of cuisine and mesmerizes guests as he grills the highest quality ingredients over Japanese charcoal. The menu at Sumi Robata Bar is anchored by a variety of dishes from the Robata grill, enhanced by traditional cold and hot Japanese appetizers. Each dish is prepared with an artisan or takumi spirit in mind.

The intimate dining room at Sumi Robata Bar reflects charcoal in its purest form with a focus on natural materials such as marble and reclaimed wood. The centerpiece of the concept is the 26-foot robata bar helmed by Chef Gene Kato himself. Guests can take a seat along the robata counter and watch as he methodically seasons bits of skewered flesh and vegetables to perfection.

The small plates served at Sumi Robata Bar are astonishingly elegant and will take your breath away with each bite. Whether you're looking for a romantic dinner or a night out with friends, Sumi Robata Bar offers an unforgettable dining experience that combines tradition, creativity, and exceptional cuisine.
