Thanksgiving Story:
About a month ago, I crossed paths with Carlos, an immigrant at a shelter where I volunteer to cook. Struggling to find work, he asked for an opportunity, and for the past three days, he's proven to be one of the most dedicated workers I've had.

Today, Carlos opened up about his arduous journey to reach here—riding atop a moving freight train for four days, breaking my heart. He's a father with a 12-year-old son in urgent need of surgery.

Carlos isn't seeking a handout; he's seeking a chance to work. If anyone has job opportunities, I can vouch that you won't be disappointed. As we express gratitude for life, family, and shelter this Thanksgiving day, let's also remember Carlos.

After our work today, he humbly asked for shoes. We gifted him two pairs of gently used size 9 men's shoes. If you have any gently used items, especially shoes, he would be immensely grateful. Witnessing his joy as he danced in the shoes brought tears to my eyes.

Today is your birthday, and it marks two long years since you left us. The ache in my heart has not lessened, and I miss you more with each passing day. Life has become a different world without your presence, and it’s a world I wish you were here to share with us.

I remember the promise I made to you - to care for your children. It hasn’t been easy, especially looking after your lively 6-year-old. Your only son misses you dearly, while struggling to come to terms with your absence. Your baby girl, who was just a year old when you left us, never had the chance to truly know her father.

Tomorrow is my birthday, but the desire to celebrate has faded since you’ve been gone. My world has been turned upside down, and the pain is still raw.

I hold onto the beautiful memories we shared, and I see your reflection in your children every day. Your spirit lives on in them, and I’ll do my best to keep your memory alive.
