The beard is still growing strong… and yes, I’ve heard it all this month:
“What’s that on your face?”
“Salt and pepper!”
“You look older.”
“You look younger.”
Every comment has been an opportunity—not just to laugh it off, but to share why I’m doing this.
I’m growing it out in honor of my dad, who we lost to cancer years ago. He was the kind of person who showed up for people quietly and wholeheartedly. If this scruffy beard sparks even one conversation that leads to awareness, support, or encouragement for someone facing cancer, then it’s doing its job.
If you’re able, consider donating to cancer research or support organizations this month. And if donating isn’t possible, sharing the message or checking in on someone who’s going through it matters just as much.

Veloria Coffee: Our Story and Journey
Our dream started to take shape in 2019—a vision of opening a specialty coffee shop where community, culture, and craft could thrive together. We found our location in Six Corners, Portage Park and excitement was brewing. But then, the world stopped.
The pandemic put everything on hold. Doors we were ready to open stayed closed. For a moment, we asked ourselves: Now what?
Instead of letting our dream fade, we chose resilience. We reimagined what Veloria Coffee could be. If we couldn’t welcome people into our shop, we would bring coffee into their homes. That’s when we pivoted—launching Veloria Coffee Roasters, an online specialty coffee brand born out of passion, persistence, and community support.
From carefully sourced beans to thoughtful roasting, every bag carries our journey—a reminder that dreams don’t end when faced with obstacles. They simply take a new path.
Today, Veloria Coffee continues to grow. What began as a delayed dream has become a movement of sharing coffee that is bold, brave, and deeply rooted in culture. And soon, that original vision—a coffee shop in Six Corners—will come alive, stronger than ever.

For public transport: Take the Blue Line subway train and get off at the Cicero Station. From there, take the #54A North Cicero/Skokie Blvd bus going southbound and get off at the stop near the intersection of North Cicero Avenue and West Belle Plaine Avenue. The coffee shop is just a short walk from there.
For driving/parking: From downtown Chicago, head north on N Ashland Avenue, then turn right onto W Irving Park Road. Keep left to continue onto N Milwaukee Avenue, then turn left onto W Montrose Avenue. Turn right onto N Cicero Avenue and the coffee shop should be on your right. Street parking may be available nearby or there is a parking lot located behind the building accessible via West Belle Plaine Avenue.
