For the past 20 years I have loved being apart of the Grand and Ogden patch of Chicago, my favorite neighborhood in the city. This area was introduced to me in 1989 through my close childhood friend, Staci, who then told me her girlfriend needed a roommate. That roommate (Tiffany) and her family (the Reboletti‘s) ended up being my second family as I lived with them for over 10 years at 1409 West Grand Ave. It was quite different back then with La Roc’s, Atlas bakery, and Grand Slam Video (where we used to rent our VHS movies and incurred many late charges!) to name a few. Little did I know that 30 years later I would have ended up building my roots here.
Through the support of my family, who were in the restaurant industry since 1968, Sip was born in 1999. Thank you Mom & Dad! Throughout the past 20 years we have gone through an expansion without closing a single day, broken pipes, a crash in the economy, went from a cash only, smoking (yes I know that’s gross!) coffeehouse and kept “grinding it out”.
The first person I ever hired was Katie. She had just moved into the city from Elgin and was only 19 years old. She has been the most loyal person to me and Sip. I feel so lucky and grateful that she stuck it out with Sip throughout all the changes. 20 years later she still is here and I can’t think of a more dedicated person with a heart of gold.
Is this all luck? I have no idea, but I would do it over in a second and don’t regret anything. This is sad and exciting at the same time for me. As my days are flying by and it’s getting closer to Sip‘s last day, I can’t help but feel thankful and blessed that I had this opportunity to meet so many wonderful people and make so many lifelong friends. Of the many things I’ve learned, one of the most important, is that we should all try to support our local independent businesses, because that is what makes a neighborhood.
My sincerest thanks to my most loyal customers who have been with me since day one. My cup runneth over.
Lastly, to my partner, my rock, the love of my life, Dan. Thank you for supporting me and always having my back.
This goodbye is bittersweet, but what an awesome opportunity it is for me to welcome new life to this neighborhood. I wish Tipsy Space all the love and success this neighborhood has given me.
❤️Nancy
