The University of North Carolina recently conducted a study on food portion sizes that found that the average hamburger is 23 percent larger today than it was in 1977. That’s 1.3 ounces and an extra 97 calories per burger.

Apparently it took a while for folks to put cheese on their burgers. The “cheese hamburger” is believed to have been invented in the 1920s in Pasadena, California. But as with many inventions, there’s some dispute about this.
