For any business in a community, I think it’s essential to be as accessible to as many people in that community as possible. We’re able to control our pricing because we don’t have investors that we’re beholden to. There’s only me in my modest little condo in West Rogers Park that needs to eek out a living. Still, even I blanch at a $5 cupcake or a $3 scone. But, unfortunately in order to maintain the quality of our product, which I will not sacrifice, while paying a livable wage for all our employees, our costs have to be what they are.
That being said, we do offer “specials” and discounts where and whenever possible. We do our $1 scones on Thursdays. Our Monster Monday Night Special where all entrees and entree salads are only $12 each (dine-in only!). And we offer an early dinner special Tuesday-Friday where 20% is take off your entire bill when you dine in between 4:00pm-5:30pm. We then also do an occasional hot chocolate special, or $1 coffee special. These are things we can do to make ourselves as available as possible to as many people as possible. Because, especially during these difficult times, every one of us deserves A Taste of Heaven!

I very sincerely highly recommend Bull & Barrel on north Western Ave. almost by Howard! Huge portions of very well prepared, delicious food! They smoke their own meats, and the quality is unmistakable! Even their sides are delicious! The collard greens were the best I’ve had (well, outside of ATOH’s😏). The fries were delicious, as was the mac & cheese and brussel sprouts. I had a combo plate of brisket and chicken, and brought home dinner for at least 2 more nights! My BFF Jean Swoboda had the pulled pork sandwich and she had to take 1/2 home as well! As well, the service was so lovely and professional! And they’re knowledgeable of how everything was made and all the ingredients! A truly outstanding meal! Also, big plus, they deliver! Barbecue is a rare treat for me, and this was by far the best I’ve ever had!

I sometimes forget what an incredibly gorgeous city we live in. There’s an absolutely beautiful bike trail the runs along the river from Belmont to Devon (where it then travels north along McCormick). It really is breath taking, well maintained and filled with gorgeous wild flowers. By Lane Tech there’s yet another Jeanne Gang masterpiece, a boat house, that was so massive I couldn’t get a great pic.

Has anyone else in the group done this? I took the 1st pic last summer then saw a service on Facebook that made canvas prints. The print isn’t perfect, but I hung it in my bedroom and it makes me happy every day.

So many people including 2 staff members requested hummingbird cake. It’s banana cake with pineapple, coconut, pecans and cinnamon. Essentially, it’s carrot cake made with bananas! I topped it with a mound of vanilla whipped cream! $6.95 each!

When I get approached by someone who says the want to start a business, I 1st say don’t do it😏. Like having children, it may look like terrific fun, but it’s more work than you can ever possibly imagine. Of course they then say you need to hire people to run it for you, but finding those people who have your work ethic and vision is next to impossible. If you are very lucky and are able to find those rare unicorns, they understandably have visions and ambitions of their own and eventually move on. Rhonda from Kopi and I discussed this in the infancies of our businesses, and we agreed that if we knew how hard it would be, we never would have started.

After I give someone all the warnings against doing it, if they still feel determined, I suggest these two books. “When Smart People Fail” explains thru multiple personal anecdotes that failure isn’t an actual event, but an interpretation of events. No one ever closes you down and tells you that you’ve “failed”. You don’t suddenly hit a wall and there’s nothing on the other side. In business, there are constant obstacles that you hit, and you decide whether to keep going or to stop. Every wall you hit (and honestly, they never do stop coming) is your choice to view as a hurdle to overcome, a lesson, or the final straw.

“The E-Myth Revisted” is a very readable blueprint for how to start and grow a small business. The author suggests starting very small (as I did), but laying out a plan of what and who you’ll need to grow. I read this book after I had already been in business 5 years and still found it fascinating and very educational. Following this guideline will give any small business owner a strong foundation on which to grow.

Do I still wish I never started? I honestly don’t know. I love my business, my customers, my community and most of all my amazing staff. I love seeing my customers children grown up and hearing stories of life events that I was able to be part of vicariously thru my work. I love having relationships with my former staff members who frequently remind me of the influence working at ATOH had on their lives and careers. But I often wonder what life would’ve been like if I had more free time, more travels, more investment in my personal life. This being said, I dreamed of opening a restaurant since I was 4 years old, and there’s a lot to be said for seeing your dream come true every single day.
