My father didn’t take kindly to how I was treated during the process of trying to secure my restaurant. He wouldn’t interfere or say much but his commentary was always subtle and hilarious 😆…
When I reached out to get the space, I was told it would be 20k. Not for the space itself, but for a bunch of old equipment that ultimately got left behind anyway. When I asked for details about leasing just the space so I could continue providing vegan food to our community, I was ignored and left on read🤷🏽♀️.
There was no help. No handoff. No baton being passed. I simply refused to take no for an answer. It wasn’t until after I released the news publicly across my platforms that I was the new owner that I heard back from the previous owners saying congratulations😏
And right on cue my dad said, “Tell him, you still want that 20k or I can just have it now”😆🤣🤣🤌🏽
Chefs 💋 😂… will literally never get old.
And the irony? The fryer broke down Saturday and now has to be replaced tomorrow 😩. I wanted to pack it up and go home!!!! But my good boss friend encouraged me to keep going!
So we did.
We turned DoorDash on and off, slowed tickets down, fried food in pots on the stove, used a countertop fryer and burned through a week’s worth of grease. But we made it 🥹.
I just know my dad would have had something hilarious to say about all of this. But more importantly, I know he’s proud of the resilience he raised in me.
As he would say, “You yo daddy’s son” 😂🥹🤞🏽

🚨🚨PLEASE DO NOT COME UP HERE TODAY anticipating the GRAND OPENING!!!!🚨🚨
It was originally postponed due to my dad having a massive heart attack and me needing to switch gears to be by his side...
In true MAIZE fashion he fought as hard as he could and gave it everything he had. Breaks my heart to a million pieces to have to say this but 6/16 he made his transition 🕊️🥹
Just days after his 58th birthday, Father’s Day and right as I was opening up my first brick and mortar💔 💔💔
I say all that to say… there will be no grand opening guys 🥹. If my daddy can’t come I don’t want it.
Once I finish remodeling I plan to just open our doors. That’s it. That’s the grand opening. For now it’s giving me the greatest peace to KEEP GOING. My father LOVED to cook & wanted nothing more than for me to succeed in this business. Being at the restaurant these last few days have helped me in more ways than I can explain.
So please continue to show up for me, love on me, and lift me up. I gotta do it for Granny and my Father Now. And to know me is to know I won’t let up.🕊️🕊️💔

Corey saw me outside the restaurant lugging in some groceries and asked if I needed help. He helped me and we talked for a bit. He told me he’s 19 and a Hyde Park Alum (yall know I love the youth real bad)…He told me he’s looking for honest work and won’t let me down… So I told him I’d feed him for his hospitality but I need an honest review. I told him if his review does well, and yall come buy some Varold’s™️ that he could start tomorrow….
What yall think…. should this young black man start tomorrow ?

A week ago today I almost lost my father to a massive heart attack🥹
But God saw fit for the story to unfold a different way, and for that I’m forever grateful. I know we were all eager to come together and celebrate the heavily anticipated Grand Opening of Varold’s™️ next week, but due to the severity of the situation I have decided to postpone it until a later date.
We will however be Soft Opening Exclusively on DoorDash this Friday 6.12 for pickup and delivery while we finish putting the final touches on our space. As always THANK YOU guys for your continued love, support, patience and understanding. Stay tuned for more updates! -Chef Ny🫶🏽
