Whiskey of the Week: Wilderness Trail Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey

This is the bourbon drinker’s rye whiskey.

It uses a relatively low rye percentage for a rye whiskey and offset the spice of the rye grain with sweetness from a relatively high percentage of corn. The rye also enters the barrel among the lowest entry proof we’ve encountered in Kentucky (100-105), highlighting the distillate’s nuance.

Mashbill: 56% Rye, 33% Corn, 11% Malted Barley

Color: Rich, unfiltered deep amber.
Nose: Sweet baking spices, oak, dark fruits.
Taste: Clove, white pepper give way to herbaceous bouquet. Candied flowers, spearmint and Earl Grey tea.
Finish: Long and succulent, florals and spearmint sweetness.
