My family left our ancestral homeland from a cruel dictatorship that came to power as a direct result of this country’s actions.

To witness the same things that my family fled from happen against our friends, family, and neighbors by the government has been upsetting, enraging, and heartbreaking.

Boonie’s is an immigrant run restaurant. Joyce and I are children of immigrants. Our space is run by BIPOC and Q***r people and is a welcoming space for everyone. White supremacist society has marginalized us. We empower each other and our community in our space.

We support the message of the strike happening tomorrow 01/30. We encourage you to divest and abstain from spending at big box stores and corporations that have direct ties to the atrocities our government is perpetrating. We also encourage you to support your community’s Black and Brown small businesses. For transparency, as an independent restaurant, we cannot afford to close a regular service day even for one day. Our team cannot suddenly lose one good shift

We will be open tomorrow, Friday, 01/30. We hope to fill your tummies and feed your souls, make things feel okay even if for just a meal. Unless you support this administration, in that case don’t come here.

Hoooy! There’s a mumu ober der!!!

While there’s no written record of the mumu, every Filipino will tell you that they couldn’t go somewhere or they had the be home before it got dark because the mumu will get you.

Pre the introduction of catholicism, most if not all tribes of the archipelago were animist and believed that most things had a spirit. The mumu seems to be the indistinct Boogeyman with no name that could stand in for any aswang, anito, or diwata.

As adults, we love joking about how we were all scared of the mumu, and pass this tradition, whether in seriousness or in jest to the next generation.

Myths, ghost, and monster stories are fun for us now, and they helped our ancestors make sense of the world, but the further time goes on, it’s evident that we’re really not that different despite being separated by centuries, when the mumu were conquistadors and friars snatching us up, or even more unfortunately, decades with some elders still alive witnessing the same horrors that they had to experience under a cruel dictatorship in the motherland only a mere 50 years ago. Stay safe from the mumu, keep your family, friends, and neighbors safe. Happy Spooky Season

Hey hey, it’s the Kapre!

The Kapre has become unfortunately a very loaded being of Filipino mythos.

Pre Spain, the creatures that became known as the Kapre were in native animist form, tree dwelling Giants who were not evil or malevolent but commanded a certain respect as they were known to be pranksters and also vengeful if their home tree were cut or damaged without their permission.

Spain perverted the Kapre myth and somewhat successfully, turned the tree spirit into a caricature of the indigenous people of the islands. They twisted the myth from powerful tree giant to smelly, hairy, dark skinned stranger with unkempt hair who hangs out in trees in just a loincloth. Even the word Kapre comes from an Arabic word for “nonbeliever” that’s historically been used against dark skinned indigenous peoples across Asia.

Words are powerful. Spin is powerful, and for centuries until present day, language has been weaponized to justify and excuse horrific crimes on behalf of empire and “civilization”. From Columbus smudging the “r” in Caribbean and accidentally inventing the word “cannibal”, excusing their crimes in the Americas, to the Spanish excusing the subjection of whole peoples because they’re savage, uncivilized kapres in the jungles, all the way to present day, reducing people to a fully made up status (that wouldn’t even be a thing if one country didn’t destabilize their/our home countries) to excuse the barbaric and heartless treatment that we see every day on our news feeds.

It’s spooky season. The world is terrifying and there are real monsters that we don’t have to make up. The world is also beautiful, full of people rich in culture and storytelling who color our existence. We have to pay attention to both.

For the safety and well being of the lovely people in our team who bring you the signature Boonie's magic, they are staying home tonight and we are closing our dining room tonight, 10/10/2025, because some people out there think that the hardworking, dedicated mothers, cooks, caregivers, and community members are dangerous and don't belong here.

Immigrants built this country. We been here. We will continue to be here. Pak Yelo

Filipino Monster number 2!

This week we have the the sometimes troublesome trickster, sometimes guardian of the forest, but either way, known to live in the boonies (ha ha, see what we did there), the Tikbalang!

Prior to Spanish colonization, the tikbalang didn't have much record, and the word was possibly used as a catchall for anything sort of forest were-creature. After the introduction of horses, which are not native to the archipelago, the Ilocos region was the first documented to turn the tikbalang into an upright horse creature, who's legs were so long that when they squat, their knees reach above their head!

Pictured: Tikbalang by eating a Bastos Burger at the bar, denying entry to those without an official warrant, cuz f*ck those guys

Happy Spooky Season!!

It's the spookiest time of year and the aswang dine among us🦇🧛🏻‍♀️🩸!

Every week we're introducing a different monster of Filipino folklore. This week, it's the queen of the Aswang, the Mananggal!!

Aswang are vampiric beings who by day appear normal and are often well liked in their community, by night, transform into monsters and suck the blood and eat the flesh of people.

The mananggal is a special aswang and among the most famous and well known. She's typically a beautiful lady by day, at night, she separates her torso from her lower body and flies away, causing death in her wake, and feedinh off the hearts, blood, and souls of her victims with her long tongue. To defeat her, one must follow the trail of blood that her hanging entrails leaves to her legs and place salt on it so she can't reattach herself before daylight!
