Being as young as I am 😎, it’s super rare to have a friend for 30 years! 🤯

I’ve been blessed with not one, but two.

We met on the very first day of school and never stopped being friends. To say we never fought would be a lie 😂 especially when we were younger. But we NEVER stopped talking or stopped being friends.

We went to elementary school together, high school together, college together, and even after I moved to the United States, we stayed in touch, mostly daily. To this day, we still talk and see each other every time I’m back in the Balkans.

This year, the three of us are taking a trip together to celebrate THREE DECADES OF FRIENDSHIP. 🥹❤️

And the most special part about this?

They were both born on the exact same day. Same date. Same year.

And that day is today.

June 2nd. One of the most beautiful days of the year. 🎂🎁🎈

I have no idea when or how it started, but for about the last 15 years, we’ve been calling each other BROTHERS. lol

So help me wish a very Happy Birthday to my two brothers!

30 years of friendship.
Countless memories.
A lifetime of love.

For most of my life, I struggled with self love and acceptance. Growing up different in a small, close minded country didn’t allow me to fully express myself, and I spent much of my childhood pretending to be someone else. The first chance I got, I left my country behind, but the guilt, shame, and doubt stayed with me much longer.

I publicly came out in my late 20s, built a life in the United States, and finally started living in my truth and freedom. Then something unexpected happened. A friendship I had built here in “the land of the free” fell apart because my friend believed being gay was sinful and kept encouraging me to find Jesus to “save” me. I was crushed. All those ugly feelings I had fought so hard to overcome as a child came back. I found myself wondering if none of this would have happened if I had simply been born different.

Then, when I was feeling absolutely broken this beautiful soul sat in my podcast chair for an interview that had been scheduled months earlier. I had no idea how much that conversation was going to bless me.

It’s almost as if God wanted to speak to me through him when he said:

“I fought so hard for my freedom, so now I must be very protective of it.”

I remember thinking, I fought so hard for mine too. So why am I allowing someone else to take it away from me?

That moment helped me let go. I stopped chasing a friendship that clearly no longer wanted me in its life, and I made a promise to myself that I would never again allow anyone to make me feel ugly for being exactly who I am.

And then, on another occasion, Nic gave me another gift that I carry with me every day:

“Being gay is a superpower.”

Nic, you have no idea how much those words, and your friendship, have meant to me. You helped me heal during a time when I felt completely broken. Your wisdom, kindness, love, and authenticity have touched my life in ways you’ll probably never fully understand.

I am so grateful that brought you into my life, because my world truly would not be the same without you in it.

I love you brother! 🫂
